First meeting
-Now that I brought you coffee, tell me something good
-Okay, who am I, and what do I do here? She asked.
-Done! Get me in, I will get you in too.
-It is complicated.
-How did you get here? Where are you from.
This chapter returns to the beginning—but not quite the beginning we thought we knew. Leanne and the narrator meet at the foodbank, both carrying the remains of places they can no longer quite locate. A coffee appears before either of them has asked for one, and somehow a conversation about work, memory, and belonging begins.
The narrator says he will explain where he came from later—perhaps over another coffee. By now, you may recognize the pattern: a small kindness becomes a promise, and the promise becomes the story you have been reading.
But this version of their first meeting doesn't settle the earlier versions. It quietly places another beginning beside them. The places have shifted, the memories have merged, and the coffee is still waiting somewhere between the two of them.
